Cruelty Free Beauty Favourites

Honestly my journey to a more ethical lifestyle (and even the lead up to building this brand) started with cruelty free beauty! With a swell of hype around beauty products in the era of YouTube Beauty Gurus, it concerned and annoyed me that nobody really seemed focused on whether or not things were tested on animals.

I started to realise that I as a consumer had a bit of power with corporations by choosing products that aligned with my values - like if everyone chooses more thoughtfully they will change. So I made a commitment to no longer buy items that were not cruelty free. Now this wasn't an overnight change and nor should it be, I didn't waste any non-conforming products I already had, I used them and then researched a kind replacement. I also became a massive bore to anyone who would listen on the merits of cruelty free beauty but that's another story!

So after years of cruelty free living I have chosen some favourites, some holy-grail products that work with my skin, my values and my budget!

Unless I'm going out for the night I don't wear a heavy face of makeup, I like a light powder foundation, concealer if needed, a little pencil eyeliner, pink or brown toned eyeshadow, lots of mascara, light blush and highlight, and a slick of balm or lipstick to finish.

My top picks include:

  • Base: Wet & Wild Coverall, Australis Fresh & Flawless, ELF Flawless Finish Foundation, Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer, Australis Colour Corrector, Nude by Nature

  • Face: Chi Chi Viva La Diva Blush Palette in Pink Mauve, Milani Blush, The Balm - The Manizer Sisters

  • Eyes: LA Girl Nudes Palette, Chi Chi eye shadow palette in Timeless, ELF eyeliner - pencil or liquid, Australis Multi Mega Lash Mascara

  • Brows: Chi Chi Brow Pomade, Australis Eyebrow Pencil, Essence Lash & Brow Gel Mascara

  • Lips: Hurraw Lipbalms, Wet & Wild Balmstain, Mellow Costmetic Lipsticks, Gerard Cosmetics Liquid Lipsticks

  • Brushes: Nude by Nature, Real Techniques, Bdellum Tools, ELF, Everyday Minerals

So I knew I loved Sukin but I didn't realise how much until I compiled my favourite skincare for the above image and it just so happens to be all one brand! I have never had such a relationship with a skincare brand (not spon - please spon) until now! I have very sensitive and dry skin, particularly in winter. I've just been through a phase of using oils such as rosehip, which lots of people swear by, however it ruined my skin and blocked my pores! it has taken me a few months of going back to my trusty Sukin regime to get my skin back to (better than) normal. Highlights for me are definitely the hydrating face mask and the daily moisturiser. The only Sukin product I own not pictured is the charcoal based Oil Balancing Anti-Pollution mask, it just wasn't right for my skin but I imagine it would be perfect for those with an oily complection!

  • Haircare: Organic Care Shampoo & Conditioners, Hask Hair Treatments, Lee Stafford, De Lorenzo
  • Sunblock: Natio Daily Defence Face Moisturiser SPF 50+
  • Fragrance / Deodorant: Ethique in Lime & Spearmint, MOR rollerball perfumes, Crystal Deodorant, Sukin Deodorant Spray
  • Home Scents: Aromatherapy Company
  • Tampons: BON organic (switching to a cup soon - any recommendations gladly accepted!)
  • Toothpaste: Red Seal

Because of my location, this list is based on items readily available in New Zealand, however many of the brands are worldwide and available online!

Stay tuned to the blog for more information, tips and fun stuff to come - up next week I'll be discussing ethical competitiveness and how it harms the cause!
